The Police Beat Office has been a joint project between the Katherine Police and the Katherine business community. A Police Partners Coordination Group that includes Kevin Grey, Trevor Ford and Marilyn McPherson has project managed the fit-out with generous contributions from Katherine businesses.

Jeanette Kerr, Commander Katherine and Northern Region, said that this will assist in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour within the Katherine central business district and in the surrounding precinct.

"We expect that the highly visible police presence will prevent and tackle crime and anti-social behaviour with a focused and dedicated policing resource.

"Alcohol fuelled violence and general assaults have been an issue in the past, however police have been focussing on this problem and with the assistance of the Police Beat patrollers, we hope to see a decrease in these types of incidents," she said.

The Katherine Police Beat Office is located at shop 2, Katherine Central Shopping Centre.

The office will provide a full front counter service between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm weekdays and 9:00 am and 1:00 pm on Saturdays.

Patrollers will undertake a business liaison function and undertake foot, bicycle and licensed premises patrols.

"The Katherine community can expect to see police highly visible on the streets from today and this will include evening patrols," Commander Kerr said.

"I would like to personally recognise the Police Beat Office partners and thank them for their commitment to community safety and making Katherine a better place to live."
