A man is in custody and another in hospital following an assault at the Ali Curung community last night.

Police were alerted just after 12.30am last night that a 20-year-old man had been taken to the Ali Curung medical clinic with head injuries. Witnesses told police the man was involved in an altercation with another man during which he was hit to the head with a tyre iron.

Tennant Creek detectives arrested a 24-year-old man in Ali Curung in relation to the assault just after 8am today.

He has been taken to Tennant Creek and is expected to be interviewed later today.
