Suspicious Fire - Palmerston

Police

Police received a report at approximately 10:20 am of four youths armed with sticks throwing rocks at the school.

Police attended the scene and conducted patrols of the area and observed a small amount of smoke coming from bushland next to the school.

While speaking with a witness, they heard a loud bang and observed sparks coming from the bushland where the youths were last sighted.

The resulting fire quickly took hold and headed towards nearby parked cars and the school's administration building. Students and staff were then evacuated from the school.

Fire and Rescue members attended the scene and conducted a controlled burn to eliminate the threat to the school and the surrounding residential area. St John Ambulance attended and one student was taken to hospital suffering from suspected smoke inhalation but was discharged shortly after.

"Fire can become out of control very quickly in the dry and windy conditions we are currently experiencing," District Fire Officer Rob Trewartha said.

"Lighting an unlawful fire is a criminal offence and a serious matter, it's not something we take lightly.

"The current fire danger is 'High' and expected to be 'Severe' by the weekend.

Infringement notices will be issued and persons may be prosecuted as the result of an unlawful fire," he said.

Police urge anyone who may have witnessed suspicious persons in the area or who may have further information to contact them on 131 444 or on Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
