Cars impounded for hooning –Alice Springs

Police

Two teenagers have had their cars impounded for 48 hours following separate incidents of hooning in Alice Springs.

In the first incident a 17-year-old was seen by police as he was driving his car erratically and doing burnouts in Elder Street and Milner Road. The incident occurred just after 5pm on Thursday, July 22.

Police seized the youth's Holden Commodore and it was impounded for 48 hours under anti-hooning legislation. He was also issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice.

Then on Friday night police received a report of someone doing burn-outs near the intersection of Undoolya Road and Kurrajong Drive. Police impounded another Holden Commodore and issued the 18-year-old driver with a traffic infringement notice.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said the anti-hooning legislation which was introduced to the Territory last year has enabled police to get irresponsible drivers and their vehicles off the roads.

"While we only have the power to impound cars for 48 hours, at least this may have the effect of making offending drivers think twice before they do it again, especially when you consider they are without their car for 48 hours and they have to pay for the cost of towing before the vehicle is returned to them.

"Hooning is not just a danger to the driver and other road users, but it is extremely frustrating for residents in the area, and we appreciate those members of the public who report these incidents."
