Explosive ordnance located - The Narrows

Police

Police were called to a house in The Narrows this morning after a resident located an unexploded ordnance in his back yard.

At about 9:20 am the 68 -year-old man was excavating his back yard on Wilmot Street when he came across the ordinance and called police.

Police immediately attended the location and cordoned off houses and restricted traffic flow either side of the scene.

Joint Logistics Command personnel, from the Department of Defence, arrived a short time later and identified the item as the top portion of an 8.5 pound practice bomb from WWII.

The item was removed by Defence personnel for disposal.

Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen commended the man for calling police immediately and warned the public not to touch items of this kind.

"Even though the bottom explosive component was not attached in this instance, it is important not to move items of this nature," she said.

"Just mark the exact location of the object and immediately call police, who will in turn alert the appropriate authorities and have the item safely removed."
