Police are calling for public assistance after a 37-year-old man was assaulted at his Nhulunbuy home early yesterday.

It is alleged at about 1:45 am an unknown man entered the back yard of the victim's Matthew Flinders Drive home before searching a fridge located outside. The occupant has heard the offender and gone outside where a short struggle has ensued before the occupant was assaulted in the face with a frozen block of prawns.

The offender fled, leaving the man with minor facial injuries.

It is believed the victim's premises had been unlawfully entered a number of times over the past week.

Police urge anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the early hours of Wednesday in the vicinity of Mathew Flinders Drive to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
