A shop assistant was assaulted with a meat cleaver as he tried to stop thieves from raiding his till in Alice Springs on Friday night.



Police received a report just before 6pm that a man had been assaulted during a robbery at Tasty Treats in the Coles Complex. The 30-year-old victim told police he was closing up for the day when two males entered the premises and asked him to cook them some food.



The victim went to the freezer and when he returned he found the pair behind the counter trying to rifle the till. One of the offenders fled and the victim began grappling with the remaining male who then picked up a meat cleaver and struck him a glancing blow on the head before fleeing.



The alleged offenders are described as being of Aboriginal appearance and aged in their 20s. One of the men was approximately 180cm tall with a slim build and wearing a white jacket with black print while the other was approximately 160cm tall with a solid build and wearing a light blue t-shirt and blue denim jeans.



Police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident to come forward. Anyone with information should phone police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
