Single vehicle rollover - Kakadu

Police

Police received a report of a crash shortly before 3:20 pm on the Kakadu Highway approximately 70km west of Jabiru.

A family of five were travelling in a Toyota Tarago from Katherine to Jabiru when it is alleged the 32-year-old male driver briefly lost concentration which resulted in the vehicle to veer off the sealed road. The driver has then attempted to correct the vehicle but came off the road again and rolled into a drain before landing on all four wheels.

Fire and Rescue officers attended the scene and extracted the 32-year-old female passenger from the vehicle who had been sleeping with her feet on the dash board.

The female passenger was taken by Jabiru Health Clinic Ambulance to the Jabiru airstrip and then flown to the Royal Darwin Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

The male driver, a 3-year-old boy and 9-month-old twins were taken to the Jabiru clinic but were allowed to leave shortly after.

"I can't stress enough that it is not safe for passengers to have their feet resting on the dash of a vehicle" Superintendent Brent Warren said.

"This was a lucky escape for the young family and just shows how important it is to have regular breaks when driving on our roads, it is better to be late than not arrive at all."
