Two vehicle rollover – Robinson River

Police

The activation of a personal emergency beacon alerted authorities to a motor vehicle accident that occurred on the Carpentaria Highway near Robinson River yesterday afternoon. At approximately 1630hrs, Search and Rescue Canberra reported the activation of an emergency beacon and alerted police communications as to the exact location of the activation. A passer by from Robinson River Station called communications a short time later from his satellite phone to confirm a two vehicle rollover on the highway approximately 90kms south of Borroloola. Police attended to find two Land Rover 4WD had overturned, one on its roof and one on its side. All four occupants were out of the vehicles and walking around. Health Clinic staff from Borroloola assessed the two drivers and their two passengers at the scene, confirming there were nil injuries. The two vehicles involved were passing each other in opposite directions on an unsealed section of the highway when one of the vehicles lost control on the road verge, overcorrected and inadvertently collided with the second vehicle causing both vehicles to roll. Divisional Superintendent Colin Smith urged motorists to take care and remain aware of their surroundings when travelling in remote areas. "In this remote part of the country it is important to drive to the conditions," he said. "It is lucky in this case that all occupants were wearing seatbelts and not travelling at speed, or the result may have been far worse." Speed and alcohol were not factors in this accident.
