Murder charge –Alice Springs

A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a man who was assaulted at Walpiri Camp earlier this month.

The man was arrested in Yuendumu on Saturday and flown to Alice Springs. He was interviewed by detectives from the Regional Investigations Division and later charged with murder. The charge was in relation to the death last week of a man who was assaulted at Walpiri Camp on Thursday September 2.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court yesterday where he was further remanded to appear on October 18.

The man was the second to be charged over the incident. On Saturday, September 4 a 21-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault. He has been bailed to appear in court on October 7.

A 21-year-old man also appeared in court yesterday charged with aggravated assault on a second victim at Walpiri Camp the same night. The victim was stabbed in the back. He was treated at the Alice Springs Hospital and has since been discharged. The alleged offender has been remanded to appear in court on October 13.
