Ultra light aircraft crash - Bees Creek

NT Police and the Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene of an aircraft crash in Bees Creek earlier today.

Authorities attended the airstrip at Jenkins Road, where it is believed the 65-year-old male pilot had been attempting to land when a number of wallabies ran onto the airstrip in front of him. The pilot took evasive action to avoid the wallabies however crash landed in doing so.

He managed to extract himself from the wreckage and lay next to the aircraft until a friend realised that he was about ten minutes over due from his scheduled flight.

The pilot's friend located the crashed aircraft on the runway and contacted the relevant authorities.

St John Ambulance attended the scene and conveyed the single occupant to Royal Darwin Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The ultra light received extensive damage in the crash.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will review the incident.
