Death of 8-Year-Old Boy Borroloola – Case Review

Warning - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are warned that this information contains the name of a deceased person following written permission from the deceased's family in order to assist with the Police investigation.

Northern Territory Police are calling for assistance from the public following the review of a case file into the death of an 8-year-old boy, Kieffen Raggett in Borroloola, 2007.

The boy was reported to Police as missing at 4.30pm, Tuesday 02 October 2007 and was found dead in a shallow waterhole on Thursday 04 October 2007, approximately 1 kilometre from the Borroloola Township.

NT Police have sought written consent from the family of the deceased to release his name to assist with this investigation.

NT Police Major Crime Superintendent, Kris Evans said while the primary cause of Kieffen's death is yet to be determined and will be subject to a finding by the Coroner, Police believe the circumstances surrounding his death to be suspicious.

"During a review of this case, several matters were identified that required further investigation.

"While I can't release every detail, the police are particularly interested to talk to the owner of a red Manchester United soccer shirt bearing the number 8 that was found near Kieffen's body."

"We believe Kieffen may have been in the company of another young boy or boys prior to being reported as missing.

"We ask any person that remembers seeing Kieffen in Borroloola on 02 October 2007 to contact the Police." Superintendent Evans said.

Six additional Police Detectives from Darwin are in Borroloola working with Borroloola Police to investigate this death.

A number of people in the Community and surrounding areas have been spoken to, Police have distributed information posters and utilised local radio to assist with the investigation.

This death will be subject to a Coronial Inquest commencing in Borroloola on the 30 November 2010 for two days, and then continued in Darwin.
