Traffic Pursuit - Alice Springs

Police

Police have arrested a 34-year-old man overnight following a traffic pursuit in Alice Springs.

Alice Springs Police were conducting routine traffic duties on Smith Street at approximately 09:40 pm last night when a Holden Commodore sped past exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 kilometres.

Police gave chase and followed the vehicle onto Lovegrove Drive where the vehicle slowed to approximately 55 kilometres per hour. The driver of the vehicle then accelerated heavily and sped away from Police. The vehicle continued south on Lovegrove Drive, exceeding 90 kilometres per hour. Police terminated their pursuit due to excessive speeds and inclement weather and as a result lost sight of the vehicle.

Although no longer in pursuit of the vehicle, Police continued along Lovegrove Drive and regained sight of the vehicle as it approached the intersection at Larapinta Drive. Police witnessed the vehicle drifting around the intersection narrowly missing another car travelling along Larapinta Drive. The vehicle then hit the gutter and came to rest on the foot path becoming bogged. Upon the arrival of Police, the driver exited the vehicle but did not attempt to leave the scene.

The driver was breath tested and returned a high range blood alcohol content result.

The driver was arrested and charged with the following offences:

Drive with a high range blood alcohol level
Drive at a dangerous speed and in a dangerous manner
Drive without due care
Fail to stop when signalled by Police
Exceed speed limit by 15-30KM/H
Drive an unregistered motor vehicle
