Police are calling for public assistance after a 21-year-old female was assaulted in Ngukurr yesterday.

It is alleged the woman was fishing at the boat ramp when she was approached by an unknown male at about 1:30 pm. After a brief conversation with the man the victim began to feel uneasy before he grabbed her and pushed her to the ground.

The woman was able to fight him off before he fled the area on foot.

The man is described as of Aboriginal appearance, in his mid twenties, of a solid build and was wearing 3/4 length denim shorts and no shirt at the time of the incident.

Police are calling for any one who may have witnessed the incident or who has further information to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Acting Commander Helen Braam said it is important to take precautions to keep yourself safe.

"Always be aware of your surroundings and ensure some one knows where you are going"

"If you are new to an area seek advice from locals and familiarise yourself with the area to ensure you don't isolate yourself from the public or help if you need it" she said.
