Caravan Fire - Winnellie

Police

Police and the Fire and Rescue Service attended a fire at a Winnellie caravan park overnight.

Authorities were called to the Shady Glen Caravan Park on Farrell Crescent at approximately 12:30 am this morning after receiving several reports of a caravan on fire.

Upon the arrival of authorities, the fire had been extinguished by residents of the caravan park.

A camper trailer valued at approximately $30,000 was destroyed. However, residents from nearby sites prevented damage to the camper trailer owners' 4WD vehicle by smashing a front window and moving the vehicle away from the fire.

The owners of the camper trailer and 4WD vehicle were not present at the time of the fire.

Police investigations today indicate that the fire was caused by an electrical fault. Police are not treating the fire as suspicious.

Senior Sergeant, Antony Deutrom, said Police are very thankful to the bystanders who extinguished the fire.

"By putting the fire out, the residents of the caravan park have prevented possible injury and further damage to other properties," he said.
