Police

Police are currently searching for a 22-year-old man after he escaped Prison custody in Adelaide River earlier today.

At about 12:30 pm the man escaped Northern Territory Correctional Services custody after stopping at a service station in Adelaide River to attend the bathroom. It is believed the man was being conveyed to Darwin from Katherine to face court in relation to an outstanding warrant.

Police are currently conducting searches and road blocks in the area and additional members are currently travelling to the location.

The offender is Syrus Wilson; he is described as an Aboriginal male, of slim build with shoulder length dark curly and a small amount of facial hair. He was last seen wearing a white singlet and blue shorts with a white stripe down the side and was still wearing handcuffs.

Police believe he may attempt to conceal the handcuffs under his shirt.

Superintendent Tony Fuller said police have a number of resources dedicated to locating the man.

"The offender is a low risk prisoner; however, police urge the public not to approach him if sighted" he said.

Anyone who may have sighted the man or who may have further information is urged to contact police immediately on 131 444.
