Hit and run arrests – Alice Springs

At approximately 3:46 am it is alleged the two youths gained entry to a Ford Station Wagon after waking up the 78-year-old male occupier to use the bathroom. As the 13-year-old youth went to the bathroom the 14-year-old youth entered another room and stole car keys.

A short time later the male heard his vehicle start and reverse out of the car park, hitting a parked motor vehicle. The man approached the vehicle in an attempted to stop the vehicle at which point the 14-year-old driver accelerated and hit the man with the side of the vehicle, knocking him to the ground.

The vehicle left the area and travelled along Angunna Avenue. It is alleged the vehicle was travelling through the intersection of Head Street and Madigan Street when it crashed into the rear passenger side of an oncoming Holden Cruise.

The vehicle left the scene and stoped for a short time on the North Stuart Highway while the youths swapped drivers.

Police observed the stolen motor vehicle travelling along the Stuart Highway without head lights on and attempted to apprehend the vehicle. A short pursuit along Wills Terrace and Railway Terrance commenced resulting in the youth being apprehended at the rear of the Coles Complex on Railway Terrace.

The 13-year-old driver at the time was subjected to a road side breath rest which returned a positive result. She later supplied a breath analysis reading of 0.051 percent.

The 14-year-old youth has been charged with:
Drive in a public place without due care
Drive a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner
Drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed
2 x Not stop after a crash
2 x Not stop or assist after a crash
Unlawful use of a motor vehicle
Drive under the influence of alcohol
The 13-year-old youth has been charged with:
Unlawful use of a motor vehicle
Drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed
Unlicensed driver with alcohol in blood
Fail to obey signal of member
The youths received bail and will appear in the Alice Springs Youth Justice Court tomorrow.

The 78-year-old male was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital for treatment but has since been discharged.
