Members from the Darwin Major Crash Investigation Section are currently investigating a fatal two vehicle crash that occurred in Karama this afternoon.

Police received a report of a crash involving a Toyota Vienta and a Holden Barina at approximately 2:50 pm on Vanderlin Drive, between Kalymnos Drive and Manunda Terrace.

Fire and Rescue members attended the scene and used the jaws of life to extract persons from the vehicles.

Ten people, including several children, were taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital by St John Ambulance. A 40-year-old female died a short time after arrival at the hospital.

The section of road on Vanderlin Drive between Kalymnos Drive and Manunda Terrace will remain closed this evening while investigations continue.

There is no further information at this stage.

Police are calling for anyone that witnessed the crash to contact them on 131 444.

This now brings the Northern Territory road toll to 46, compared to 29 for the same period last year.
