A 23-year-old man will be charged in relation to a number of traffic offences after a pursuit in Katherine overnight.



Members were conducting patrols at 50 Cent Park, Katherine at about 2:25 am when the observed a black Ford Falcon XR6 sedan doing burnouts on the Stuart highway at the Chambers drive intersection.



Police activated their emergency beacons on First Street and instructed the driver to pull over, however he accelerated away and a pursuit was initiated.

The car continued along First Street driving through the middle of two roundabouts at the intersections of Giles and Warburton Streets before turning left onto O'Shea Terrace and driving into O'Shea Park. The offender and his passenger then got out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.


The passenger was apprehended and identified the driver who was arrested a sort time later at Kalano Community.

He was subject to a breath test and return a blood alcohol content reading of 0.120%

The vehicle suffered extensive damage with the tyres blown out and severe damage to the under carriage of the vehicle and will be towed from the scene later today.



Police expect to charged the man in relation to the following offences later today.

Drive on traffic island
Drive without plates displayed
Recklessly endangering life
