Drink Spiking - Darwin City - Update

Police

NT Police are again urging partygoers to remain cautious when drinking after receiving a series of reports of drink spiking over the last two nights Darwin's CBD.

Police received three reports of drink spiking on Friday night and early Saturday and a further four reports over night.

All reports have been a result of incidents in nightclubs and bars in the Darwin CBD and several of the victims required medical treatment.

At this stage police believe there are seven victims who have shown symptoms that are consistent with drink spiking. The majority of victims targeted have been young females aged around 20 years.

The victims are describing the symptoms as nausea, dizziness, loss of muscle control, respiratory problems and memory loss.

It is currently unknown how many offenders are involved.

It appears the offenders are not only spiking alcoholic drinks as one victims reports she was offered water.

Police are investigating all reports of drink spiking and are calling for anyone who may have information to contact Police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are advising members of the public not to let themselves become victims. Keep your drink with you at all times, stick to bottled drinks, don't share drinks, and don't accept drinks from strangers.

Know your limit and if you feel it's time to stop, do so and find a safe way home.

If you think your drinks been spiked tell a friend, security staff or police immediately and seek mediation treatment.

With the festive season upon us, there are a lot of people participating in Christmas parties and heading to clubs and pubs afterwards. Stay in control, watch your friends, and tell someone if things start going wrong.

Media Note - An interview opportunity will be available at 3:00pm with Duty Superintendent Del Jones. Please meet in the press conference room at the Peter McAulay Centre in Berrimah.
