Vehicle rollover - Nhulunbuy

Police

An 18-year-old male is likely to be charged after a vehicle rollover that occurred yesterday evening in Nhulunbuy.

The male and his three younger passengers were travelling in a Mitsubishi Pajero on the Central Arnhem Highway near Giddies Crossing at around 6:00 pm, when it is believed that the driver has lost control of the vehicle after it struck a pot hole, causing it to roll.

The four young people were taken to the Gove District Hospital where a blood sample was taken from the driver. Charges of at least Provisional Driver with alcohol in blood are likely to be laid once the exact reading is known.

Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon of Nhulunbuy Police said that this was very close to becoming a tragedy.

"The fact the driver was drinking and driving his three mates around is terrible. What makes it even worse is that he is on his Provisional License. All four occupants are extremely lucky to have escaped serious injury" he said.
