Rescue - Stranded Vehicle - Berry Springs

Police

NT Police and Emergency Service personnel rescued a 58-year-old man from a flooded roadway in Berry Springs overnight.

Members attended Hopewell Road at about 12:30am after receiving reports a man was sitting on top of his 4x4 after becoming stranded in floodwaters.

Humpty Doo Police immediately attended the scene however the water was too deep and swift to reach the man; members subsequently requested a NTES boat to attend and assist with the rescue.

A short time later NTES personnel arrived and on the scene and successfully rescued the man out of flooded bushland by boat.

It appears the victim was attempting to cross a flooded creek and underestimated the depth of the water when his vehicle began to float away.

The man was conveyed to RDH by police as a precaution and the vehicle will be towed from the scene once the area is safe.

Watch Commander Garry Smith urged the public to heed all warnings and stay off the roads.

"If you wouldn't walk across it then please do not drive across it. Not only will you put yourself in danger but tie up resources and place Police, Fire and Emergency personal in danger'.

"Our resources are better utilised elsewhere than attending to incidents that can be quite simply avoided" he said.
