Update # 9 - Cyclone Shelters

Police

The Bureau has advised the CDC that weather conditions are not expected to intensify enough to warrant cyclone shelters being activated.

"As the system remains a category one, home is still the safest place to be." Police Commissioner and Chief Executive of the Emergency Services John McRoberts says.

"Advice from the Bureau is that Cyclone Carlos is not expected to intensify dramatically over the next 12 hours, allowing the CDC to review the situation again at its next meeting at 9am tomorrow morning."

The CDC would also like to reiterate that Flood Shelters at Casuarina and Nightcliff have been opened to accommodate people whose houses have been inundated with floodwater - they are not cyclone shelters.

Authorities would also like to quash inaccurate reports that the Homeless Emergency Response Centre at the Showgrounds is not cyclone coded.

"The Showgrounds accommodation is cyclone coded and will be able to withstand current weather conditions." Mr McRoberts says.
