Update # 22 – Darwin River Dam and Adelaide River

Police

Police, Fire and Rescue and Emergency Services continue to monitor the localised flooding situation in the Darwin River Dam and Adelaide River area.

Residents in the Darwin River Dam area are experiencing some localised flooding in low lying areas, with approximately five homes having been inundated with a meter of water throughout the day.

The dam has reached capacity and excess water, approximately 490 mm, continues to spill over the spillways.

Adelaide River is currently at 12.4 metres and is not expected to rise much further throughout the night. The maximum level it can reach before breaching the bridge is 13.2 metres. Police will continue to monitor the situation and urge everyone to stay away from water ways due to the constant threat of crocodiles in the area.

Whilst the bridge has not been breached, Adelaide River Township has been experiencing localised flooding and road conditions in the Berry Springs area have deteriorated dramatically. It has been reported that large slabs of bitumen have been undermined by the water, causing vehicles to be become bogged whilst driving.

Police have been operating in the Berry Springs area throughout the day and have a Forward Command Centre established at Berry Springs Fire Station. Throughout the day, utilising a helicopter, Police have being checking residents in the area and have assisted a number, however no rescues have been affected at this time.

In the morning they will continue to patrol the area by both land and air and move into areas as the water recedes.

Police urge anyone that may need assistance to either call through on 1800 888 901, 000 if a life is in danger, or flag down passing police members.

Police also continue to urge people to not attempt to trim any fallen trees near power lines as this can be deadly.
If you find yourself in this situation, please contact the Power and Water Corporation on 1800 245 092.
