Aircraft incident – Victoria River

Police

A female pilot made a lucky escape today after landing her small plane on the edge of the Victoria River.

The 49-year-old female, and sole occupant of the light aircraft, left Bullo River station at around 7:30 am this morning travelling to Darwin.

Shortly after take-off, she experienced power loss. An emergency landing was performed onto the mudflat on the Western edge of the Victoria River.

She then walked approximately one kilometre and due to the incoming tide, had to swim across the swollen Victoria River to the opposite bank, where she activated her personal emergency beacon.

Her husband, a helicopter pilot, was notified through AUSSAR and immediately flew to the location and found her safe on the banks of the river.

They both then returned to Bullo River Station.

Due to the incoming tidal waters, the Cessna is fully submerged and unable to be viewed or recovered at this time.

Brevet Sergeant Michael Lunney of Timber Creek Police said that this was a great result.

"This could have ended tragically but due to her fast thinking, flying experience and activation of her beacon, not only was she rescued swiftly, but by her husband no less" he said.
