Barkly Highway closed –Tennant Creek

Police

Motorists are warned that the Barkly Highway is closed to all traffic after heavy rain has caused localised flooding across the highway.

Acting Superintendent Craig Barrett said police had been notified of a water hazard approximately 600 metres long on the Barkly Highway 60 kilometres east of the Barkly Homestead.

The water is approximately one metre deep and the road is considered impassable. There is also another hazardous area approximately 60 kilometres west of the Barkly Homestead where the water is half a metre deep across the road.

"We've had reports of numerous places between the Queensland /NT Border and the Barkly Homestead being inundated and extremely hazardous to cross," A/Supt Barrett said.

" Motorists are urged to delay their journey until the water has had time to subside. Care should also be taken in areas where road surfaces have been damaged by localised flooding.

"Warning signs have been erected on the Barkly Highway where the road has become impassable and several motorists are already stranded in the area and have taken to camping along the side of the road until conditions improve."

Motorists are urged to check road conditions before travelling anywhere in the Northern Territory while these weather conditions continue. The website for road condition updates is http://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/roadreport/.
