Barkly Highway Closed - Update

Police

The Barkly Highway remains closed to all traffic after heavy rain has caused localised flooding across the highway.

The road is currently closed from the NT / Qld Border to the Barkly Homestead. A section of the highway about 60 kilometres east of the Barkly Homestead remains impassable with one metre over the road near the Wonarah bore rest area.

There is also half a metre of water over the road at the Freweena bore rest area about 60 kilometres west of the Barkly Homestead.

Superintendent Craig Barrett said sections of the highway near the Queensland/NT Border are extremely hazardous to cross, and urges motorists to avoid the area if possible.

"Motorists are urged to delay their journey until the water has had time to subside and we believe this may take another few days depending on conditions.

"Please check road conditions before travelling anywhere in the Northern Territory while these weather conditions continue" he said.
