Finke drink drivers –Alice Springs

Police

Police tested more than 3100 drivers over the three day long-weekend at the Finke Desert Race.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said police held 14 RBT stations over during the special operation and five drivers were caught exceeding the blood alcohol limit.

"Although that is still five too many, given that 3165 drivers were tested it probably isn't a bad ratio, and most of those were caught on the first day," Sgt Robertson said.

"We still had a problem with people riding unregistered motorbikes and quads on the Maryvale Road. Twelve riders will be summonsed to court for these offences.

"We also had an incident where an obviously un-roadworthy vehicle was being driven on public streets in a disorderly manner. The vehicle had no bonnet, windows, lights and no driver's door. There was extensive damage to the panels and it was covered in graffiti. The 35-year-old man driving the car will face court for various traffic offences."

"A 19-year-old disqualified driver was also issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice after he was caught riding a 50cc miniature trail bike on what was a very dusty road with next to no visibility.," Sgt Robertson said.

"You just have to wonder why some people come along to these events when they've packed their swags but have clearly left their brains at home."
