School Holiday advisory – Alice Springs

Police

Senior Sergeant Trevor Owen said many people travel interstate during the mid-year school holidays and leave their premises vulnerable to opportunistic thieves.

"At this time of year people need to be aware of the risk they take if they don't make security arrangements for their homes if they go on holidays," Sen. Sgt. Owen said.

"Ideally, you should organise someone to house-sit while you're away, however if that is not possible, at the very least you should advise your neighbours and making sure someone comes around to check on the premises. Make sure your mail is collected regularly and if possible have sensor lights installed to deter would-be offenders.

"Leaving a light on inside is also a good idea to act as a deterrent. We would also encourage people to go to their local police station and fill in an Absentee Owner Advice. This will alert police to the fact the house is empty and also advise of the owner or occupant's contact details."

"Neighbours should also remain vigilant during the holiday period and report any suspicious activity by phoning triple zero or 131 444."
