Drunk driver caught by off duty Police after crash - Katherine

Police

A 19-year-old man will face a range of traffic related charges after he crashed his motor vehicle and tried to flee the scene in Katherine overnight.

At approximately 7:20pm, Police alleged the 19-year-old driver lost control on a bend in Katherine East and collided with a parked vehicle and a fence, causing damage to the car and several other parked cars in the area.

Katherine Division Superintendent Brent Warren said off duty Police Officers who live in the area responded immediately after the crash occurred.

“On hearing the crash, four off duty Police Officers came onto the street to find the occupants of the vehicle trying to leave the scene.

“The off duty Officers arrested the driver, who was later charged with drink driving (.120%), drive whilst unlicensed and drive with undue care. A passenger was also arrested for an unrelated matter.

“The off duty Officers who responded to this incident have clearly gone above and beyond the call of duty.  This dangerous drunk driver picked the wrong place to crash a car and expect to get away with it,” Superintendent Warren said.
