RBT Runners - Alice Springs

Police

Two people will appear in court after they tried to dodge an RBT station in Alice Springs on Friday night.

Southern Traffic Operations members were conducting a Roadside BreathTesting station on South Terrace just before 6pm when one approaching vehicle swerved to the left of the road and parked 70 metres short of  where police were standing.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said a second vehicle did exactly the same thing a few seconds later.

“The drivers of both cars then alighted and tried to make a run for it but police apprehended them both. A 22-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man were breath -tested and both found to be drink driving.

“The man blew .135 per cent while the woman failed to supply a sample. Both were also found to be disqualified drivers. They will both face court for driving disqualified and failing  to obey the direction of a police officer. He has also been charged with mid range drink driving while she has been charged with failing to supply a sample.

“What was also worrying was that police found there were 11 passengers crammed into both vehicles,” Sgt Robertson said.

“This was a disaster waiting to happen if either one of these drunk drivers had lost control of their vehicles and crashed their car.

“And it was clear both drivers knew they were drunk and disqualified or they wouldn’t have tried to run from police.”

Sgt Robertson said police would continue their RBT campaigns throughout the next few months and leading into the holiday season.
