Police ask - “Why was the crocodile crossing the road?”

Police

Watch Commander Garry Smith was stunned last night when he came across a saltwater crocodile on the road in Berrimah.

At approximately 10:30 pm Senior Sergeant Smith was returning to the Peter McAulay Centre when he noticed the reptile on Secrett Road.

He immediately requested assistance, stating the animal was large and angry.

Two General Duties Officers from Casuarina attended to assist in the capture of the animal.

Senior Constable Sean Stanley said they received the call whilst patrolling nearby.

“The Watch Commander told us it was around eight metres in length so we headed straight there,” S/Constable Stanley said.

“Upon arrival we established he may have been slightly exaggerating, with the animal closer to one metre in length.

“My partner Constable Baldwin and I utilised one of the Police issued raincoats, wrapping the animal up before we taped its mouth closed. NT Parks and Wildlife Rangers were called and soon came to collect the animal.”

This is not the first time Senior Constable Sean Stanley has dealt with a crocodile whilst on duty. Back in March 2008 S/Constable Stanley shot at a four metre saltwater crocodile that was stalking a drunken swimmer off the coast of Groote Eylandt.
