Police are warning motorists that roads around Kings Canyon have been closed due to severe bushfires in the area.

Regional Counter Disaster Controller Acting Commander Michael White  said the Luritja Road from Kings Canyon Resort to the Lasseter Highway and the Ernest Giles Road from  the Stuart Highway to the Luritja Road have been closed due to a significant fire front which has flared up again this afternoon.

“Strong winds have driven the fire across the Luritja Road this afternoon causing a danger to the travelling public,” A/Cmdr White said.

“We have significant fire-fighting assets in place, and NTES are working with local station  owners to combat the blaze. Additional police and Bushfires NT members are also en route to support them from Alice Springs,  however with the current weather conditions we face a very real challenge in containing the fire and we want to ensure the travelling public avoid the area while we’re doing that.

“At this stage fires closer to Alice Springs are under control , however the Emergency Operations Centre will remain activated until further notice to monitor the situation.”

The public is reminded that a total fire ban is in force throughout Central Australia and will remain until further notice.
