Emergency crews continue to fight fires on various fronts in Central Australia today as hot and windy conditions hamper efforts.
Regional Counter-Disaster Controller Michael White said police were using helicopters this afternoon to survey the fires from the air in the Kings Canyon region.
“The roads around Kings Canyon have been closed since yesterday afternoon while fire-fighters have been trying to contain a number of large fires in the area.
“Latest reports indicate significant fire fronts are blazing near the Luritja Road and Ernest Giles Road in particular. Additional resources have been sent to the area to support those crews on the ground who have been fighting the fires for the past few days,” A/Commander White said.
“Additional troops have already been sent from Darwin comprising Bushfire NT and NT Fire and Rescue Service members and volunteers. We are also expecting a contingent of fire fighters and equipment from South Australia and these will be deployed to the Kings Canyon fire front as soon as they arrive in the Territory this afternoon. “
Meanwhile, police are warning people that it is an offence to travel on roads which have been closed to the public.
“Whilst we are aware of the significant disruption to tourist operators and the motoring public in general, we are determined to ensure no-one is put at risk while conditions remain so volatile,” A/Commander White said.
“These roads will remain closed until further notice and we will prosecute anyone not complying with these directives.”
The road closures will be re-assessed at 8am tomorrow morning.
