Update #4 -Fires -Alice Springs

Police

The Luritja Road between Lasseter Highway and Kings Canyon has been re-opened to traffic this morning.

Incident controller  Sgt Shaun Gill said emergency crews had again worked through the night to contain the fires which have been burning for weeks.

“Luckily we had cooler conditions last night and a change in  wind direction which enabled our crews to make significant inroads into containing the fires,” Sgt Gill said.

“Also the extra fire -fighting contingent from  South Australia arrived in Kulgera last night and they have gone directly to the fire site in the Kings Creek Station area. This has given us an additional 17 personnel and four water tankers as well as a command centre which has now been established on the corner of the Luritja Road and the Ernest Giles Road.

“While we have been able to re-open the Luritja Road to allow transit to and from Kings Canyon, the Ernest Giles Road is still closed as is the access road through Boggy  Hole.

“We have also closed a section of the Old South Road this morning due to a fresh fire outbreak between Horseshoe Bend and the Fink Community. However, the fires which have been burning near the Simpsons Desert are now under control so the access tracks in the south east corner of the Territory have now re-opened.”

Motorists are still urged to drive with care and ensure they have their lights on. Anyone wishing to report a fire should phone 131 444.
