Fires around the Kings Canyon area have been contained overnight however motorists are being warned there is still a significant smoke hazard in the area.
Regional Controller Acting Commander Michael White said crews had again worked through the night to create fire breaks and most of the fires in and around Kings Canyon had been successfully contained.
“The problem now is there is thick smoke in the area around several sections of the Stuart Highway, particularly between Erldunda and Stuart Well,” A/Commander White said.
“We also have significant smoke hazards along the Stuart Highway to the north of Alice Springs between Aileron and Ti Tree and again to the north -west along the Barkly near Avon Downs.
“We are continuing to warn motorists to be wary when driving in these areas. Drive with your headlights on and be alert to the threat of livestock or wildlife wandering over the roads.”
Anyone who wishes to report a fire is asked to call 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
