Missing People Located - Alyangula

Police

A couple missing for around 12 hours after they set off in a dinghy were this morning found safe and well in Alyangula.

Officer in Charge of Alyangula Police Station Senior Sergeant Tony Deutrom said the 38-year-old man, his wife and a dog were first reported missing last night.

“Police were informed at about 7.20 that a man, woman and a dog in a dinghy were in trouble near Flat Rock, approximately one kilometre off the beach,” Senior Sergeant Deutrom said.

“Fisherman in the area at the time heard their calls for help, however were unable to assist.

“Police searched for the vessel late into the night without success and recommenced the search resume again at first light this morning.

“Police were in the process of coordinating a sea and air search this morning when we were told the missing pair had swum ashore.”

Senior Sergeant Deutrom said the couple set off yesterday afternoon in a 15 ft dinghy but due to bad weather and a lack of fuel they were unable to return to shore.

He said those venturing out to sea should follow basic marine safety rules.

“I can’t stress enough the importance of taking water safety seriously,” Senior Sergeant Deutrom said.

“When setting off, tell people where you’re heading,” he said.

“Take enough food, water and fuel to last you for several days.

“Take the appropriate safety equipment including EPIRBS and always check the weather and tides before leaving your house.”

The 38-year-old man was summonsed to appear at Alyangula Magistrates Court for failing to maintain essential marine safety equipment on his recreational vessel.
