A 30-year-old man has died following a crash between a car and a pedestrian on the Stuart Highway near Mataranka this morning.
Commander David Proctor of the Northern Command said the driver was travelling in a Toyota Prado along the highway at around 3:50 am when he struck the man lying on the road approximately 25 kms north of Mataranka.
“The 32-year-old male drivers stopped at the scene and called Police,” Commander Proctor said.
“Police and local health clinic members attended and conveyed the man to Katherine Hospital; however he was declared deceased several hours later.
“The driver of the vehicle was breath tested at the scene and returned a negative result.
“Katherine Investigations members will be investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.”
The Territory road toll now stands at six compared to two for the same period last year.
