Fraud Squad Nets Computer Scammer

Police

Major Fraud Squad Detectives have arrested a 19 year-old man in relation to obtaining money through deception.

Police will allege the man used computers and mobile phones to defraud an Australian corporation while he was living in the Northern Territory and continuing to do so while he travelled overseas.

Detective Acting Superintendent Peter Schiller said the man had had set up sophisticated internet techniques in order to make the fraudulent on-line claims.

“By setting up these accounts he was able to obtain up to $50,000 through phone systems and internet masking programs.  It is a shame that this young man has used his obvious talent for alleged criminal behaviour.”

The man was arrested yesterday at the Darwin Airport with assistance from the Australian Federal Police.  He has been charged with Criminal Deception and Attempt Criminal Deception and has been bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court at a later date.
