Police have arrested four men following the theft of firearms from a gun supply store in Berrimah overnight.
Acting Commander Matt Hollamby of the Darwin Metropolitan Command said at around 11:30pm Police witnessed a Mitsubishi Magna travelling outbound along the Stuart Highway without it’s headlights on.
“Police attempted to pull the vehicle over however the driver accelerated off down Vanderlin Drive,” A/Commander Hollamby said.
“Police followed the vehicle as it drove down numerous streets in Berrimah. At around 11:55pm the vehicle travelled down the dirt road to Knuckey Lagoon Community when all five occupants fled the vehicle on foot.
“Four of the men were arrested a short time later and after a search in and around the vehicle, Police located a stolen shotgun.”
It is alleged the five men unlawfully entered a gun supply Store in Berrimah shortly before 11:30pm.
“It appears the men kicked their way through the store’s glass doors and stole two unsecured firearms and a quantity of ammunition.
“The men fled the area in a Magna, only to be spotted by patrolling Strikeforce Trident Members moments later.
“Police are also investigating the circumstances of how the alleged offenders were able to access the firearms,” A/Commander Hollamby said.
All alleged offenders are to be interviewed and charges are expected to be laid later today.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
