The Rotary Club of Darwin North has announced Station Officer Craig Slack and Auxiliary Captain John O’Shea as the winners of the 2013 ‘Eric Simmons Award for Fire Fighters’

The Eric Simmons Award is presented to a career and volunteer Fire Fighter in recognition of the different yet equally valued contribution they make to the community.

Her Honour, the Honourable Sally Thomas AM, the Administrator of the Northern Territory officially presented the award to the two Fire Fighters at the Fire and Rescue Headquarters in Stuart Park last night.

Chief Fire Officer Steve Rothwell said the two winners clearly stood out as ambassadors for the NT Fire and Rescue Service

"The two individuals are shining examples of our organisation and have been recognised for their commitment and contribution. I congratulate both Craig and John on being selected to receive this award."

Station Officer Craig Slack said he was honoured and surprised to be named Fire Fighter of the year and added it would not have been possible without the camaraderie and friendship of his fellow Officers.

“This is an individual award but when you are working together on the frontline to get the job done and trying to turn a negative into a positive the best we possibly can, to share that determination and commitment is very rewarding.”

Auxiliary Captain John O’Shea, a 21-year volunteer with the Nhulunbuy Fire Station said it was great honour.

“I just love the job and the passion of the Fire Service, we have some excellent people out there, the camaraderie of the men and women I work with and the close-knit community, it just makes it all worthwhile.”

Pam Robinson from the Rotary Club of Darwin North said they were proud to sponsor this event.

“This is our second year we have been involved with this award and we have another two deserving winners.  There is an old saying that the notion of silent gratitude is not much good to anyone, so with that in mind the Rotary Club of Darwin North is very happy to recognise the vital contribution made by Fire Fighters in the Northern Territory.”
