Police Crack Down on Motorised Bicycles

Police

Darwin Traffic Operations members are cracking down on motorised bicycles in Darwin, the Northern Suburbs, Palmerston and the rural area.

Superintendent John Emeny of the Traffic Operations Division said Police have recently seized a number of motorised bicycles across the Territory.

“The use of these bicycles on public roads is illegal and I urge people not to be tempted to buy them online, or to make them themselves,” Superintendent Emeny said.

“Not only are the riders a serious danger to themselves, they’re a danger and a hazard to other road users. Some of these bicycles are able to travel at speeds in excess of 60 kph and yet they have none of the safety features a registered motor vehicle has.

“The Motor Vehicles Act states powered cycles may not exceed 200 watts, otherwise it will be considered a motor vehicle and is required, by law, to be registered.

“Many motorised bicycles available online list manufacturers’ specifications as 80cc engine power output 3,500 watts, 70cc engine power output 2500 watts, 50cc engine power output 1600 watts.

“In all of the above cases, the power output well exceeds the permissible 200 watts.

“Anyone intending to fit an engine to a bicycle for use on a public road, should check manufacturers specifications. If the power exceeds 200 watts, it may only be used on private property, with the consent from the owner or occupier.”
