Police are investigating a suspicious structure fire which occurred in Katherine South yesterday afternoon.

Acting Superintendent Kylie Proctor of the Katherine Division said Police and Fire and Rescue members attended a block of flats on Bernhard Street, having received reports of a structure fire at around 3:30pm.

“Police members used force to gain entry to two residences in an attempt to locate anyone who may have been inside, though thankfully no one was at home at the time,” A/Superintendent Proctor said.

“Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which is believed to have originated on a pile of mattresses at the back of the property.

“Police urge anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
