A 56-year-old man was found safe and well after he became lost hiking at Mount Gillen yesterday afternoon.

Southern Watch Commander, Senior Sergeant Chris Wilson the man departed from Flynn’s Grave at around 4pm in the direction of Mount Gillen without food or water.

“Police received reports from concerned relatives at around 7:30pm the man had not returned.

“Police conducted a search of the area and located the man at around 9pm near the summit of Mount Gillen. It appears he walked off the track and became lost in dense scrub.

“The man did not sustain any injuries but was treated for dehydration at the scene.

“I urge anyone setting off on a hike to plan ahead. This includes carrying enough food and water and making sure you tell someone where you are going and when you intend to return.”
