A man and a woman from Darwin will appear in court following a cannabis and kava seizure in Oenpelli overnight.

Superintendent Michael White of the Arafura Division said Police were conducting checks on vehicles travelling into the community along Oenpelli Road when they stopped a Holden Commodore.

“Members searched the vehicle and located 10kg of kava in two backpacks,” Superintendent White said.

“A further search located 70 grams of cannabis and a small amount of alcohol hidden in the boot.

A 20-year-old man was charged with possession of trafficable quantity of cannabis and possession liquor in an alcohol protected area. He received bail and is to appear in Maningrida Court at a later date.

A 49-year-old woman received a Notice to Appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court for possession a trafficable quantity of kava.

“Oenpelli Police will continue to crack down on offenders trafficking illicit substances and liquor into Arnhem Land,” Superintendent White said.
