Cannabis, Kava and Alcohol Seized - Oenpelli

Police have charged two men with drug and alcohol offences following a traffic apprehension near Cahills Crossing.

Acting Superintendent Neville Pulford said Police were conducting vehicle checks on Oenpelli Road yesterday, targeting alcohol and illegal substances being brought into Arnhem Land.

“During the operation Police apprehended a rental car and located five bottles of spirits and two cartons of beer inside the vehicle.

“Police also located 75 kilograms of kava divided into 30 gram deal bags concealed in four suitcases and 24 grams of cannabis.

“Police seized the alcohol, kava, cannabis and the rental car and arrested two men aged 36 and 52.

“Police estimate that if the kava was sold in Arnhem Land it could have fetched $100,000.”

The two men have been charged with:

Possession and supply a commercial quantity of kava

Possession of cannabis

Bring liquor into an Alcohol Protected Area.

They will be scheduled to appear in Oenpelli Court at a later date.

“Police will continue to proactively target people bringing alcohol and illegal substances into remote communities,” Acting Superintendent Pulford said.
