Northern Territory Police have seized 200kg of kava in two separate incidents in Darwin yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Mark Malogorski from the Drug and Organised Crime Squad said Police were alerted to a suspicious container and conducted a search of the freight.

“Police located 160 kilograms of kava divided into more than 3,000 individually packed bags.”

“Police estimate the kava could have fetched $160,000 if sold in remote communities.

A 46 year old man was arrested and charged with:

Possess commercial quantity of kava

Supply commercial quantity of kava

He will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court at a later date.

“Police also apprehended a 53 year old man transporting 40kg of kava to Darwin.

“Police are dedicated to removing harmful substances from the Northern Territory. If any member of the public has information in relation to kava, drugs or alcohol in restricted areas please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

The alleged offender has been charged with possession and supply of a commercial quantity of kava and will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court later today.
