The Cyclone WARNING from Numbulwar to Cape Shield has been cancelled.

A Cyclone WATCH continues for coastal areas from Cape Don to Elcho Island. Tropical cyclone Gillian is moving slowly north over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria.

TC Gillian is expected to move westwards through the Arafura Sea and pass the north of Nhulunbuy during Sunday then continue moving west off the north coast of the Top End.

Regional Emergency Management Committee reconvened today. Commander Bruce Porter, Regional Controller of Region 2 said the Local Emergency Management Plans have been activated and authorities are well prepared.

“At this stage, public shelters are unlikely to be opened, however authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.

“The local Police from various Police Stations across the region are working with members of each community to ensure everyone is well informed and the community is well prepared for this type of weather event, with residents assisting one another to prepare their homes.

“Along with direct contact with local authorities, communities under Watch and Warning are being kept informed through local meetings, local radio, and public PA systems in some communities.

“Now is the time to put together your emergency kit, clear your yards and commence home shelter preparations. Fill any water containers you may have (you should have at least 3 litres of water per person per day for at least 72 hours) and fill your vehicles' fuel tanks. It is also a good idea to fill Jerry cans with fuel if you have any.

“Check that your friends, family and neighbours have heard and understood the messages, particularly those who may not fully understand English,” said Commander Porter.
