Police

A 39-year-old man remains in police custody after he crashed his vehicle into a power pole causing a power outage in Katherine North overnight.

Superintendent Megan Rowe said Police apprehended the driver of a Ford Falcon on Katherine Terrace at around 11:45pm, for the purpose of a roadside breath test.

“Police allege the driver sped away and Police followed the Ford Falcon for a short time before losing sight of the vehicle.

“Police located the vehicle at the corner of Giles and Auster Street. It appears the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a power pole.

“The vehicle and power pole sustained extensive damage resulting in the loss of power in Katherine North. Power was completely restored by 5am.

“The driver attempted to flee the scene but was arrested by Police with assistance from a member of the public.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing however it appears alcohol and speed may have been contributing factors.
