Phones Credit Cards Most Popular For Thieves

Police

Alice Springs Police are reminding people to secure and protect their belongings following several incidents reported to Police in recent days.

Acting Senior Sergeant Phil Emmett, Officer in charge of the Alice Springs Police Station, said four reports of opportunistic stealing have been bought to the attention of Police since last Wednesday.

“Three of these relate to the theft of credit cards and subsequent illegal purchases of goods using the ‘pay wave’ transaction.

“These criminals are becoming very adept at using this technology to rapidly purchase goods and then dispose of the cards to avoid apprehension.

“Phones also remain a popular target as they are easily concealed and used by a criminal to their advantage if not properly protected with passwords and other security features.”

Acting Senior Sergeant Emmett said all four victims had their phones and cards taken in an instant.

“One reports having her handbag stolen from a shopping trolley, another from the car when in paying for petrol and the other when putting her bag down to load shopping into the back of her vehicle.

“This is an example of how quickly these thieves will take an opportunity to ruin someone’s day.

“All we ask is people to be aware of who is watching and apply a minimal amount of security to your possessions.”

Acting Senior Sergeant Emmett said investigations into the thefts are continuing and Police are following up several leads.

“We have some very good information in regard to these incidents and urge anyone who witnesses a crime of this nature, notices anyone acting suspiciously in shopping areas or has any information on any of these incidents to call Police on 131 444 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
